Lumber is wood that has been processed into uniform and useful sizes (dimensional lumber), including beams and planks or boards. Usually milled boards called lumber. Lumber is mainly used for construction framing. Finished lumber supplied in standard sizes, mostly for the construction industry primarily softwood, pine, cedar, and other available type of lumber including teak, oak, Mahogany, sal tree, indian rosewood, deodar cedar, rosewood, etc.

Plywood is a material made of thin layers or “plies” of wood veneer glued together with the grain of adjacent layers rotated up to 90 degrees from each other. It is an engineered wood material in the panel family, which also includes medium density fiberboard (MDF), oriented strand board (OSB), and particle board (chipboard).

There are several wood materials used by most sign manufacturers to build custom outdoor signs, but the following are the most common: waterproof plywood (Crezon board), redwood (natural wood), cedar (natural wood), and HDU (high-density urethane) foam (wood substitute). When CNC or sandblasting custom outdoor wood signs, HDU foam, redwood and cedar are the best materials for this type of application. HDU foam is probably the best material for sandblasted or CNC signs because it comes in one piece and has a completely uniform depth when it comes to carving the design into the material.

MDF is an engineered composite material. There is no visible grain in MDF, and the sides and surface are fibrous and fuzzy. The smooth surface makes MDF a popular material for painting.

Signs made of plywood are memorable because of their authentic appearance. With plywood, letters and graphics can be engraved, die-cut, machined and painted.
